The inessive

1. Use

To signify that something is IN something, you don't use a preposition like in English. Instead, you add -ssa/-ssä to the word. The inessive is one of the 6 location cases.

1.1. When something is IN something

Finnish	English
Leipä on kaapissa.	The bread is in the cupboard.
Me asumme Suomessa.	We live in Finland.
Kirjastossa on tänään paljon ihmisiä.	In the library are many people today.

1.2. When saying something happened at a certain time (see also dates)

1.3. When two things are closely connected

Katja Lehtinen puhelimessa.	Katja Lehtinen on ("in") the telephone.
Istumme pöydässä.	We sit at ("in") the table.

Kenkä on jalassa.	The shoe is on ("in") the foot.
Käsineet ovat käsissä.	The gloves are on ("in") the hands.

1.4. When you use "to have" for objects

Huoneessa on 2 ikkunaa.	The room has 2 windows.

1.5. When using the verb "käydä" (to visit)

Minä käyn kaupassa.	I visit the shop.

2.1 Words ending in a single vowel (-a/-ä, -u/-y, -o/-ö): add -ssa/-ssä

2.5.1. New words ending in -i: add -ssa/-ssä

New words are words that haven't been around for ages yet. Usually they're recognisable because they're a loanword, like "pankki" for "bank", or "paperi" for "paper".

2.5.2. Old words ending in -i: replace -i- with e and add -ssa/-ssä

Old words are very often nature words. After all, nature has been around for so long that Finns have had names for them since the very beginning. Some words are confusing, for example "äiti" (mother) is actually a new Finnish word!
