The third infinitive
1. Use
A form of the verb which is called the third infinitive is used when two verbs are combined. This is particularly common when a verb of motion like "tulla" (to come), "mennä" (to go) or "olla" (to be) appears together with another verb. You also use it in the so called agent structure.
This way of combining verbs is often used in Finnish.
| You could say: |
| "Olen siellä ja laitan ruokaa." |
| = I'll be there and I'll be cooking. |
|
| But Finns actually say: |
| "Olen siellä laittamassa ruokaa." |
| = I'll be cooking there. |
2. Formation
This form is identified by the suffix -ma/-mä which is added to the present tense stem in the strong grade (found by putting the verb in the third person plural and removing the -vat).

After this form, you add the appropriate case-ending.
