The passive imperfect
1. Use
The passive is used extensively in Finnish. It corresponds to the English "one", the German "man", and the French "on" passive. It refers to actions by an unspecified person or persons.

2. Formation
2.1. Verb type 1: weak stem + ttiin
The weak stem is the stem you get by taking the minä-form of any verb and removing the final -n.

If the weak stem of a verb type 1 verb ends in an -a/-ä, the -a- is replaced by -e-.

2.2. Verb type 2 and 3: infintive's stem + tiin
The infinitive's stem is the stem you get by removing the last two letters of verb type 2 and 3.

2.3. Verb type 4, 5 and 6: infintive's stem + ttiin
The infinitive's stem is the stem you get by removing the last two letters of verb type 4 and 5.

3. Negative passive imperfect
Form this by taking the positive passive imperfect and removing the -iin. Behind the one or two t's you have left then, add an u or an y, depending on vowel harmony. In front of this word construction you of course have to add "ei"

3. Examples
Helsinki perustettiin vuonna 1550 Vantaanjoen suulle. Helsingin perusti Ruotsin kuningas Kustaa Vaasa.
Vuonna 1812 Helsingistä tehtiin pääkaupunki. Vuonna 1952 Helsingissä pidettiin olympialaiset.
- Olisi hauska tietää, miten suomea opetettiin 1700-luvulla.
- Suomea ei opetettu 1700-luvulla. Kouluissa opetettiin vain ruotsia ja latinaa.
- Syötiinkö Suomessa aikaisemmin paljon lihaa?
- Ei, ei syöty.
- Soitettiinko minulle pankista?
- Ei, ei soitettu.
