To listen
So what's the difference between kuulla, kuunnella, kuulostaa and kuulostella? It's really quite simple:
| 1. Kuulla means "to hear". Hearing happens without having to focus on it, unlike listening. |

| Minä kuulen ääniä. |
I hear voices. |
| Kuule, minä olen ajatellut... |
Listen, I have been thinking... |
| 2. Kuunnella means "to listen". |
| |
| Examples: |
| Minä kuuntelen radiota. |
I listen to the radio. |
| Kuunteletko? |
Are you listening? |
| 3. Kuulostaa means "to sound like". It always gets used in combination with the elative case. |

| Examples: |
| Miltä lintu kuulostaa? |
What does the bird sound like? |
| Se kuulostaa iloiselta. |
It sounds happy. |
| 4. Kuulostella gets used very rarely, usually when you try to find out about something. |
| |
| Example: |
| Yritän kuulostella mitä mieltä hän on asiasta. |
I try to find out what opinion he has about the matter. |
