To play
The English verb "to play" corresponds to a number of different Finnish verbs:
| 1. Pelata: to play games and sports. This is a partitive verb. |
| Examples: |
| Minä pelaan jääkiekkoa. |
I play ice hockey. |
| Sinä pelaat tennistä. |
You play tennis. |
| Hän pelaa jalkapalloa. |
He plays soccer. |
| Me pelaamme pesäpalloa. |
We play baseball. |
| Te pelaatte sulkapalloa. |
You play badminton. |
| He pelaavat golfia. |
They play golf. |
| 2. Soittaa: to play an instrument, to play music/records, to ring the doorbell. In these cases, soittaa is a partitive verb. |
| Soittaa also means "to call". When you call TO someone, you use the allative case: -lle. |

| 3. Näytellä: to act, to play a part. |

He plays a big part/role. |
| 4. Leikkiä: to play children's games, to play with something. |
| Examples: |
| Minä leikin pihalla. |
I play in the garden. |
| Sinä leikit Legoilla. |
You play with Lego. |
| Hän leikkii nallea. |
He plays with a bear. |
| Me leikimme nukkea. |
We play with the doll. |
| Te leikitte palloa.. |
You play with a ball. |
| He leikkivät ulkona. |
They play outside. |
